Colorful bases will only merge with what will be seen under the lens at extreme magnification. Worse, the base may reflect light that will make the observed image hazier and more difficult to analyze.
Hence, a microscope slide is made to pass through certain standards. Call them tests. Call them requisites. But a microscope slide has to possess the following characteristics before it can be considered as a worthy tool for a particular field of study involving the usage of a microscope.
These characteristics are:
* The microscope slide should be transparent. It should be made of plastic or glass. Transparent surfaces will help muster the focus on the subject of the study. Such a slide will not compete with the attention of the user. And such a slide will not merge with the colors of the subject.
* The slide should have a standard area of 25 x 75 mm. This will produce a rectangular shape. Such a shape will be easier to manage. And the size will be small enough for easy handling, and large enough to support the subject of the study. This, however, does not preclude the usage of bigger surfaces, but such would have to depend on the needs of a particular case and the ability of the microscope to process observations using this kind of base.
* The slide should have a standard thickness of 1 to 1.2 mm. This is to ensure that light diffusion will be optimal, that is, it will not be too bright as to blur the field of vision, and it will not be too dark as to cloud the image that should be seen. Some cases, however, require thicker slides. This is not really prohibited. The rule of the thumb, after all, is to purchase the slides that are slightly thicker than what their projected usage requires.
* If you're planning on observing a subject in liquid form, make sure that your slides will come with cover slips. Cover slips will flatten the drops of liquid so that air will not form bubbles that will be detrimental to the study to be undertaken.
Once you have fund a microscope slide possessing all the characteristics mentioned above, you can't rest assured that a more fruitful and definitive study can be had with your microscope.
